Lesson 69: Navex 2

Camden - Katoomba - Bathurst - Orange - Oberon - The Oaks - Camden

Saturday 26 Feb 2011 at 9.00am with Dave Cooper in Warrior VH-PBS

Weather: scattered cloud 1500 feet, overcast 9000 feet.

See Navex 1 and Navex 3

Must write this up while fresh in my mind...

* Planning - double-check frequencies against ERSA - I had written 119.9 for Orange; it's 119.0.
* Don't taxi against brake!
* Fuel calculations on log/backing sheet
* Ensure all comms are OFF before engine start (and before master switch OFF). That's COM 1, COM 2,
  NDB and transponder. Probably not the audio panel itself.
* Learn the navigation/communications equipment: left knobs on KLX 135A for
  frequencies; right for GPS. Leftmost white button toggles active/inactive
  frequencies; right button is OK on GPS. GPS needs about 5 OKs before it's
  properly alive.
* Learn the GPS!
* Radio: mic switch separate from phones switch on KMA 24 audio panel - set both to COM 1.
* Program as many frequencies in as possible, ie:
  COM 1: Tower (120.1) + Ground (121.9), then switch Ground to Sydney radar (124.55)
  COM 2: ATIS (125.1)
  NDB: Camden (281) for quick return if cloud rolls in; then Katoomba. Toggle with FRQ button.
    Check both using the ADF switch on the audio panel and listening to the morse code.
* Leftmost buttons on the audio panel are for the ILS marker, so not relevant to VFR.
* Transponder is brand new, and works differently. Practice changing the code, but make sure it's
  on standby (SBY). Press VFR button to set it to 1200. 3000 needs to be set.
* Nav to Bindook (116.80). Identify by switching it to VOICE and pressing NAV 1 on audio panel
  (What does it transmit, ie what do we listen for? Morse code?)
* For a hot day - the fan control is to the right of the RH yoke.

Lessons Learned

  • On a go-around, positive rate of climb before retracting the flaps!.
  • Don't track towards an inbound reporting point.
