Flying Training
Lesson 34: Area Solo Check
Saturday 2 September 2006, 2.30pm with Kerry Scott in Citabria VH-RRW
Weather: clear, wind N 5kt
Another lesson written up months after the event (it's 21 November!). This would be because of the embarrassing radio calls I made, and specifically saying, 'Roger' when I was out of ideas.
Until then it was a good lesson. Kerry asked me to take her hither and yon over the training area, and played the part of a keen passenger, eg "Can you take me over the Light Horse Interchange?" (No, because it's outside the training area.) We also rechecked all the boundaries, and the location of the step from 4500 down to 2500 feet (east of Bringelly and the 'square lakes').
We covered practice forced landings again, and I learnt the importance of maintaining plenty of height to give me more options if the engine stops for real. For example Kerry pointed out at one point (and at three thousand feet) it would be possible to glide back to the airfield instead of looking for a landing field closer by. "Then we can discuss it over a cup of tea."
