Flying Training

Lesson 60: Training Area

Saturday 26 April 2008, 4pm in Citabria VH-WKM with Angus

Weather: wind variable, 5 knots.

Angus and I picked the best day in a week of wet, wild and windy weather. We rolled up at Camden to find the conditions close to idyllic, with none of the turbulence that upset Alexander's equilibrium on his flight.

After a delay while WKM was refuelled we taxiied out to runway 24, waited while a couple of aircraft came in to land, and took off, turning right after takeoff to keep well clear of the glider area. I followed what is by now a fairly well-trodden path to The Oaks, by Lake Burragorang, north to Warragamba Dam and east to Hoxton Park, before returning via Bringelly.

Angus took a few photos (below) and especially liked it when we made a steep turn to look at some feature on the ground. He was only surprised when we returned to the airfield before the hour was up, but it was getting a little dark. By this time it was about 5.15pm so the tower had finished for the day, and there was plenty of CTAF traffic to keep track of. We descended to circuit height and joined downwind for runway 24, making an uneventful landing. Angus was surprised at how far we floated down the runway ( I suppose I could have been a smidgeon slower on final) and as we exited via the grass taxiway was already looking forward to longer flights. What a great passenger.
