Some idiot lit fires along Mount Hay Road at Wentworth Falls last night. We woke to smoke across the whole northern half of the sky. It's warm, dry and windy today so this is a bit of a worry.
[Update 5:45pm - it's cooler now and less windy. We've cleaned the gutters and filled them with water. The wind has also shifted and the smoke
is drifting further to the north. The update from the RFS below indicates that the speed of the fire front has slowed.]
A fire is burning 5km north of the villages of Wentworth Falls and Hazelbrook in the Blue Mountains. The fire began on Friday night along Mount Hay Road at Leura and has burned an estimated 700 hectares
The Fire is located along the Urella Ridge and is moving in an easterly direction. It has spotted across Wentworth Creek but is still 6-7 km west of Linden Ridge.
The rate of the fire’s spread has slowed as weather conditions have eased this afternoon.
Four helicopters and an erickson air crane are water bombing the fire fronts.
At this stage there is no immediate threat to property but residents in Faulconbridge and Springwood north of the Great Western Highway will be doorknocked this afternoon to give them information about the approaching fire.
Firefighters may undertake some back burning this evening along the western front of the fire off Mount Hay Road Leura if weather conditions permit.
Residents can keep up to date by logging into the RFS website on www.bluemountains.rfs.nsw.gov.au or calling the Blue Mountains Emergency Call centre on 4782 3200.
